Research for the presentation: Davina India

A few days ago in class I did a presentation about Davina India. Here is some of the information I noted down and my most important PowerPoint slides:

Davina India is a talented fashion 3D designer from Germany. She studied a degree in fashion design in her home country. Her final project’s topic was “The creation of human through extra-terrestrial influence”.  She is now 27 years old but has been keen on the fashion world from a very young age. As she says in the interview with We The Cool Magazine, “When I was a kid I made shoes and accessories out of paper and wore the wildest clothes combinations. Sunglasses were a must for every look. So I knew early on that I would go into fashion later.”

She is inspired by avant-garde silhouettes and shapes, which she combines with extraordinary fabrics and materials. But since some of her designs are impossible to make with physical materials, she learnt how to develop her designs on her own in 3D design software.

She is influenced by as Daniel Widrig and Konti Chr, contemporary artists focused on 3D designs and rendering as well. The first one, Daniel Widrig started as an architect but now works In a wide range of fields including sculpture, fashion, furniture design and architecture. His studio is considered to be in the vanguard of digital art and design.

During her interview with the magazine We The Cool she stated that she takes her inspiration from many different areas “but the art of nature definitely dominates, from plants and trees to glowing deep-sea creatures”.

As well, she mentions music as a very important source of inspiration and spirit. She likes listening to spherical or deep sounds, as well as Grimes, Aurora and Gesaffelstein. All of her designs start as 2D sketches on paper. After creating the initial idea, she works on it in a 3D rendering software such as Blender or 3ds Max Design. This process includes experimentation with shapes and colours. Even though most of her first pieces were limited to golden and silver tones, lately she has been using many reds as well, with occasional purples, blues and greens.

Since it was an oral presentation I might have not said that word by word, but I do believe that the main ideas I talked about are here as well. Furthermore, I contextualised her work into mine, talked about other designers similar to her and that inspire her, and how this research affected my project.

  1. You gave a really good presentation last week and this powerpoint demonstrates that well. You have the opportunity to expand on a lot of what you discovered when creating this presentation, in terms of Daniel Widrig and Konti Chr or the music she is influenced by.
