Exploring the brief and choosing a theme

Before deciding which theme I will choose for my project I decided to explore the brief itself and the different themes; since none attract or inspire me.

Aim
"To create a set project in your continuation route using one of the themes stated below.  The project should have four 2D outcomes and one 3D outcome.  You will use your blog as a sketchbook to show the journey of your work and you will present final work on your website."

I believe I will have to adapt the brief to my progression route, fashion buying, but I will talk about it with my teacher during the project sign off.

These are the themes and my initial thoughts about them:

1. Oriental Surprise. Explore the art of the Orient both traditional and contemporary.
I believe that this theme is very broad and can be interpreted in many different ways, which is positive, but I have never felt especially attracted to this culture, unlike some of my classmates.

2. Primitivism. Enjoy a ride into the past.
I have already decided that I am not going to work on this theme because I find it eurocentric and offensive, as well, I do not see a clear way to transfer primitivism into clothing, it is closely related to fine art.

3. Ultimate Black. Create your pieces using the colour of night.
Using black exclusively does not seem especially interesting to me because I enjoy eye-catching colours and designs, but I believe that black can be the central part of the collection along with pops of colour in the designs to enhance it. As well, playing with texture can be key.

To decide between the first and the third theme I made trend boards:

1.Oriental surprise

2. Ultimate Black

After creating these mood boards I have reached a conclusion. My project will be based on the third theme, ultimate black. The most decisive image that made me choose this theme was this one:

Porcelain doll by Alexandra Koukinova

It made me realise that "the colour of the night"  can have different tones and meanings since some nights are cloudy, others are full of stars, some are stormy, etc.

  1. Even though your project choice is Ultimate Black, it seems you are aware that there are variations, tonal differences you can use within your project, also remember that black can be mixed from a variety of colours, which is another route you could explore in terms of how you use colour/tone in this project. Both the mood boards here show a lot of ideas to follow up on in later posts, well done.
