In-depth research

To prepare for the project sign off I am going to research three artists that are relevant for my work. For this, first I have to have a clear understanding of the meaning of the Earthly Delights.

"Bosco reproduced in grisaille the third day of the Creation of the world, when the waters of the earth separated and the earthly Paradise was created. Above, on the left, God the Father appears as Creator, as indicated by two inscriptions in Latin, one on each table: He himself said it and everything was done; He himself ordained it and everything was created (Psalms 33, 9 and 148, 5). In the open triptych, with bright colors that contrast with the grisaille, the painter included three scenes that have sin as the only common denominator, which begins in Paradise on the left panel, with Adam and Eve, and receives its punishment in Hell. on the right panel. The central panel shows a Paradise deceptive to the senses, a false Paradise given over to the sin of lust." (El Bosco. Tríptico del Jardín de las Delicias, Silva, 2016)

I decided to explore Sin, a collection by the National Gallery with works by artists like Warhol and Mueck.

"Sin has been a recurrent subject in art over the centuries. In a religious context, it means an inmoral act that is considered to be a transgression against divine law. In a secular world, it means a serious or regrettable fault, offence or omission." (Cowan, "Explore the concept of Sin at the National Gallery")

Sin, according to Saint Gregory the Great, an be divided into seven deadly issues; pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth)

I found another artist that treats these concepts in  similar, flamboyant, chaotic way: William Hogarth.

This painting illustrates the disastrous consequences of marrying for money rather than love. It is the first of a six piece series satirising the upper class.  In them, the characters show the same behavior as Boschs', and the setting is as chaotic, with objects everywhere, dropped things on the floor and poses of disinterest. THe luminosity is lower in this painting than in the first two parts of the Earthly Delights, but the use of colour and the strokes are as impressing, along with subtle shadows and remarkable details.

To create my collection I need to explore not only the meaningful side of Bosch, but his style and appearance as well. While trying to link this to other artists, the first thing that popped to my mind was Moschino's SS20 collection, which is inspired as well in Picasso and the cubist movement.

Even though I find William Hogharth's paintings impressive, I rather use as inspiration this Moschino's collection instead because of the vivacity of it's colours and the fun, unconventional shapes of the clothes.

Lastly, the final piece of inspiration I will be using is Kelsey Short's Fashion Marketing Portfolio that I found thanks to my teacher on yesterday's meeting. I will be using this portfolio as a guide to help me index the points I need for the fashion buying aspect of the collection; creating a customer profile, exploring the demographics, trend forecasting, brand research.
